Background
Dialost is a fast growing VoIP
operator with offices in Amsterdam, Berlin and Moscow. The company
specialises in collecting and terminating VoIP and TDM traffic
between European and former Soviet Union countries. In the past
this has been done with an infrastructure based on a Mera
SoftSwitch and Cisco. To continue their growth Dialost needed
carrier-class media and signalling gateways to allow SS7
connection to the TDM world.
WTL Solution
After an extensive selection
process Dialost chose a WTL solution based on the SoIP Gateway.
This SS7 to IP gateway is scalable from 1 to 32 E1s with matching
numbers of VoIP calls. The initial system offered Dialost 8 E1s
with SS7 signalling links to 2 carriers. The product's small
footprint was also important as it had to be placed in rented rack
space in a commercial co-location facility.
Dialost Managing Director Andrei
Arkhipov explained the choice of
WTL, "Our requirement was pretty clear.
We were actually looking for
small (8 E1s) SS7-H.323 gateways for a reasonable price and that
is where WTL matches very well. All other solutions we saw were
either very expensive (for example, Cisco and Avaya) or did not
have direct SS7-H.323 conversion (like Veraz using SIGTRAN)". He
also noted some of the 'extra' features offered by the SoIP
Gateway, "Support for both H323 and SIP on the same unit with even
switching between them will be useful for the future. I also like
the fact that there is some very flexible switching and routing in
the product. My traffic can come in from any carrier, IP or TDM
and be routed out to any other carrier. That is not something you
find in the average gateway".
The installation
took place in Frankfurt with physical E1 connections to 2 carriers
there. On the IP side 2 virtual trunks were created for traffic
from Dialost's Cisco infrastructure in Russia and locally in
Germany. "We had some problems with the IP traffic at the
beginning but the WTL guys sorted it out online with my engineers
at our NOC in Moscow."
SoIP Gateway Initial Installation
Business
Development Director Simon Pearson commented, "The deal with
Dialost was concluded very quickly. They knew precisely what they
wanted and our SoIP product fitted the requirement exactly. The
fact that a second SoIP gateway has been ordered within 8 weeks of the installation of the first one
shows how well the product has worked in the Dialost network".

SoIP Gateway
WTL's SoIP offers
an easy to use, cost effective way of connecting VoIP based traffic
to SS7 networks.

The product is
based on the field proven WTL signalling software installed on more
than 100 operators and includes support for many country / carrier
variants.
Applications include:
-
Creating small
SS7 PoPs
-
Linking legacy
networks to VoIP carriers
-
SS7 tunnelling
through a VoIP network
-
Central
signalling with distributed trunks
-
Extend life of
existing Class 4/5 switches
-
Collecting VoBB
subscribers' traffic
-
Connecting
Next-Gen Application Servers to TDM networks
Future
Dialost have already ordered a second SoIP Gateway for their
Amsterdam node and it is planned that other PoPs will follow.
