WTL’s Rural Telephony is a hit at ITU [ 3/11/2011 ]While attending the ITU Telecom World in Geneva, World Telecom Labs have been delighted with the number of enquiries for our Rural Telephony solutions. We received many serious expressions of interest and took part in a series of high level meetings. These involved Ministers, Regulators and Universal Access Fund representatives from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The picture below shows WTL Managing Director, Leigh Smith, in discussion with Mrs Omobola Johnson, Nigeria’s Minister of Communication Technology. Nigeria is one of several countries with significant funds allocated to Universal Access projects to bridge the Digital Divide and give phone and internet access to the estimated 100 million of the population currently not served. Following the meeting Smith said, “The Minister explained the current position where there is a critical need for rural connectivity in Nigeria and was very interested in the fact that WTL has proven and cost-effective solutions in this area. Of course, our experience of having a number of existing customers in Nigeria and our selection by the Nigerian Rural Telephony Project license holders to be their partner also seemed to impress her”.
WTL’s approach to Rural Telephony combines our unique bandwidth-saving technology for VoIP over satellite with our Pre-Paid expertise to create a new benchmark in Rural Communications. The solution offers cloud-based billing for voice and data users in any location. Smart prioritisation allows VoIP and IP data to share the same narrow-band link and WTL’s patented NOP means voice calls at great quality use only 6K bps each.
· Rapid deployment, minimum OpEx
· Works with VSAT, Wi-Fi, radio
· Ideal for Universal Access projects
· Reaches under-served regions
· Applications for oil & gas and mining sectors
· Emergency communications & NGOs
WTL supports multi-service operator in Cyprus [ 14/10/2011 ]WTL has completed a very successful installation of the SoIP multi-protocol gateway for Cyprus’s most innovative operator, Teleconnect. Teleconnect was established to offer Premium and Value Added Services to the market in Cyprus and having outgrown its existing TDM-only platform turned to WTL to supply a replacement. Teleconnect’s aim was to find a switch to allow SS7 connection between the carrier and their TDM-based IVR. This switch should divert traffic to the IVR (SS7 to TDM) and to external providers or Call Centers (SS7 to SIP) according to the number dialed by the subscribers.
A number of solutions were considered and rejected including a combination of Cisco with Asterisk (this turned out to be expensive and more importantly, not sufficient for the task).
After long research the decision was made to use WTL because it was recognized as a High Performance, Cost Effective SS7 to TDM/IP Gateway. With WTL, things are simplified since traffic can come from any carrier (SS7, TDM, IP) and be routed out to any carrier (IVR, VoIP, National Network etc). In this way Premium Rate Numbers (900XXXXX) and Toll Free Numbers (800XXXXX) coming into the switch are analyzed and routed internally to the IVR or to external Call Centers using VoIP (SIP Protocol).
Andros Iniatis, Managing Director of Teleconnect declared himself very satisfied with the project to date and summarized, “We would like to admit that WTL was by far the best solution for our company, as it fitted our needs so closely The applications built-in to the switch are very rich and we find them extremely user friendly.”

New STM-1 product handles huge traffic load with ease[ 28/6/2011 ]
WTL have teamed up with London-based Zamir Telecom to deploy a high capacity link from UK to Bangladesh. Zamir required a rock-solid platform on which to base their heavy wholesale traffic to the sub-continent and turned to WTL to replace their existing supplier who could not cope with the consistently high load.
The solution designed created a large scale, resilient STM-1 TDM to VoIP gateway which handles SIP traffic on one side and SS7 signalling on the other. For maximum resilience, this combined Media and Signalling Gateway uses 2 STM-1 links managed by 2 redundant WTL SoIP Controllers. Traffic volumes have been increasing from day 1 with more than 2 million minutes a day now being shipped. In the peak times the WTL switching engine is handling more than 50,000 calls per hour, including authentication of all the inbound VoIP calls with power to spare.
Reliability has been very impressive with zero downtime since the installation phase. As a result Zamir have been completely satisfied with their decision to select the WTL SoIP Controller and are growing their business with confidence.

Leading ISP uses WTL for Triple Play offering[ 4/4/2011 ]ABCom is the leading ISP in Albania and is the only broadband cable operator in the country that offers 3P (Triple play). Due to the success of their initial VoIP service they needed to improve both the fixed Telephony part of their bundled service and also their interconnection with the main operators in the country.
Following a very thorough selection process covering many leading vendors, the company chose WTL as their supplier. The WTL solution was based on a redundant pair of SoIP Gateways with built-in RADIUS support.
A central reason for this project was ABCom’s need for a more resilient, robust solution at the heart of their network. This meant that DMTP3, the WTL redundant, distributed SS7 signalling technology was a key selling point. Simply, this allows ABCom to split their essential SS7 signalling links and voice trunks across 2 physical WTL platforms and results in a very high availability system even in the case of major system failures at ABCom or the public network operators they connect to.

Major Breakthrough in Rural Service Provision[ 7/12/2010 ]100+ WTL tele-centres (satellite call shop & cyber café) installed in Morocco as part of innovative Universal Access solution.
The WTL solution represents a breakthrough in rural service provision. Every site supports multiple voice and internet users connected by VSAT to a central WTL hub. Bandwidth optimisation for VoIP saves satellite costs from 100s of sites. WTL’s ‘WebTL’ application gives a low-cost, easy to deploy billing & provisioning system. It is web-based and provides billing for data and voice traffic using only a standard browser in each tele-centre.
Leigh Smith, Managing Director of WTL commented, “This is an ideal project for WTL, playing to the company’s 3 main strengths, namely, satellite bandwidth optimisation for VoIP, pre-paid capability and SS7 connectivity” He added, “We believe we have a blueprint here for a cost-effective solution that will be copied in many developing regions with hard-to-reach locations”.
COLT Extend Contract for WTL network equipment[ 8/11/2010 ]COLT and WTL have agreed an extension to their successful agreement whereby WTL supply high capacity, high reliability voice switches to give back-up to COLT customers in the Netherlands.
Following the initial 3 year term, where zero downtime was recorded on the WTL equipment, an open-ended extension has been negotiated. WTL will continue to supply the highly flexible, carrier-grade IPNx switch to act as back-up for COLT’s core network for certain key customers. The current system supports around 200 E1s of voice traffic and provides fail-over redundancy for SS7 signalling links to all COLT’s main carrier partners.
Leading Belgian ISP deploys WTL for SME & residential VoIP services[ 19/11/2010 ]WTL have supplied a new VoIP infrastructure to EDPnet, the leading independent Internet Service Provider in Belgium. The system, based on WTL’s highly successful SoIP SS7/IP gateways, is currently being deployed and trialled. When complete this will allow EDPnet to offer a range of voice and data or triple-play services to subscribers.
The key factors in the selection of WTL were the highly-regarded, resilient SS7 signalling support, the redundant network design that this allowed and the ability to easily integrate with EDPnet’s back-office systems.
The two companies have also announced plans to jointly address the Russian market.
EDPnet is an independent Internet Service Provider. The company offers services in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Great-Britain and Russia. Thanks to an international network, EDPnet can offer fast, inexpensive and high quality internet services in all the countries in which it operates. EDPnet offers ADSL, ADSL2+, SDSL, leased lines, fibre, dial-up connections and telephony.
EDPnet has 65 full time employees and is currently enjoying a period of strong growth driven by both increased subscriber numbers and acquisitions. The new VoIP services will be offered directly and through EDPnet’s network of over 400 resellers.
WTL Pass France Telecom SS7 Spirou Tests in Record Time.[ 2/9/2010 ]The WTL SoIP Gateway has passed formal interconnect testing with France Telecom’s SS7 network. France Telecom uses “Spirou”, a national variant of ISUP, and WTL were able to pass all required tests in the shortest possible time.
A key factor in the speed of passing the tests was the quick and easy way that the SoIP can be reconfigured to deal with all the many different test scenarios required by France Telecom.
Matthew Saltiel, Account Manager for WTL in France, stressed the value of this approval, “It is so important to get the testing right first time when interconnecting with a major PTT like this. A failure means that the customer has to go round the whole testing loop again and that means a delay to launching your service and paying the test fees a second time. Now, any customer in France who connects to Spirou knows that the WTL SoIP Gateway will pass first time.”
The testing was based on VoIP subscribers connecting directly to the SoIP and being routed through to France Telecom via SS7 links for PSTN break-out. This represents a typical business model for WTL’s operator customers who collect calls from residential and business users via SIP trunks. This model meant that features had to be supported which are specific to residential and business subscribers: call redirection, privacy options and emergency calls, for example. Direct Spirou interconnection with France Telecom gives the WTL customer better revenue, more flexibility and greater technical autonomy.
Charles Elong, a third party consultant who managed the entire interconnect project praised the efficiency of the France Telecom test regime, “From the pre-test conference calls to the actual on-site engineer, everybody was very helpful and professional. The whole process was remarkably smooth and, of course, we had put in a lot of time and effort running through the specifications and preparing for the formal tests. They seemed to appreciate that WTL knew SS7 very, very well; they didn’t have to explain things twice to us.”
Simon Pearson, WTL’s Business Development Director agreed adding, “WTL have dealt with the testing departments of many PTTs over the years and I must say that this was one of the best. Our company has developed its own SS7 stack which, of course, gives us the freedom to modify and reconfigure the switch very quickly. The France Telecom engineers acknowledged this, they pointed out that it normally takes ages for the manufacturer to fine-tune between tests but with WTL, it was done in the blink of an eye.”
For reference, the WTL SoIP was tested as OLB (local loop) and ELB (long distance) equipment according to the ARCEP (French regulator) test specifications. The tests involved proving that calls are routed correctly in many different scenarios and that all SS7 signalling elements are interpreted correctly. A major benefit in this case is the use of configurable filters which allow the WTL SoIP to either pass SS7 elements transparently, block them or act upon them locally within the switch. It is this flexibility which maintains the integrity of the SS7 signalling across the network.
