Off the shelf VoIP gateways are not designed for use over satellite so they are wasteful of bandwidth and voice quality can be poor. WTL's NOP (Network Optimization Protocol) has been developed to overcome these issues. WTL saves your bandwidth (on a busy link NOP generates 25 times less packets than SIP) and addresses jitter, out of sequence and lost packets that can cause voice quality problems. In a European Space Agency (ESA) funded project WTL equipment has been proved to achieve the seemingly impossible of reducing satellite capacity usage and maintaining audio performance.
