Soft transcoding module for multi-network interconnection
Transcoding is a vital element of ensuring media connectivity between different VoIP and IP networks. With many different codecs in common use, the need to ensure smooth interworking through agile transcoding is stronger than ever.
In the past, conversion, or transcoding, between different codecs has been a task that has required dedicated hardware platforms, as it is demanding and processor intensive. Such platforms consume valuable real estate and have proven to be costly, both in terms of CAPEX and OPEX.
World Telecom Labs’ has now introduced soft transcoding to our range. It can be delivered as a virtualised solution, integrated into existing products, such as our multi-service SBC, or deployed as a standalone module in commodity processing hardware.
Flexible interworking between a wide range of codecs
The soft transcoding module offers integrated support for a wide range of codecs, which eliminates incompatibilities between networks. These include:

- G.723.1 (6.4 Kb/s)
- AMW NB (12.2 and below)
When deployed alongside our signalling and session control products, signalling conversion is supported, ensuring full interworking between each connected network. It is fully aligned with WTL’s “any in, any out” approach, which gives any-to-any flexibility.
Easily add transcoding capabilities
The soft transcoding module can be added to existing deployments or offered as an option with new solutions. It’s an easy way to overcome media incompatibilities and ensure the smooth delivery of traffic.
Connect to different networks
With many codecs to choose from, operators and service providers need an easy way to accommodate variants that they encounter. The soft transcoding module supports any-to-any transcoding, reducing barriers to interconnection and increasing choice.
Low entry point and low footprint
Because of the ease of implementation, it’s easy to adopt the soft transcoding module with minimal initial investment. As a software solution, it gives much wider flexibility, since it can be deployed in hardware or as a virtual instance, saving costs.
The soft transcoding module offers high scalability, allowing deployments to grow rapidly to cater for increased traffic volume. Up to 500 simultaneous sessions can be supported in a single HPVx platform, while other performance measures depend on the chosen processor environment.
